The Great PowerPivot FAQ: How can I import public data made available via the Internet?

Title

How can I import public data made available via the Internet?

Answer

Use the Data Feed data source in PowerPivot.

PowerPivot v1 provides out-of-the-box support for ATOM 1.0 data feeds. All SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) 2008R2 reports as well as SharePoint 2010 lists are consumeable by PowerPivot via ATOM 1.0 feeds. While the aforementioned ATOM-based data sources are probably the most common you can also leverage ATOM 1.0 in PowerPivot to consume public (Internet) data feeds as well.

There are many public locations of ATOM 1.0 data feeds, one such example can be found at http://www.weather.gov/alerts-beta/
